PORTLAND, Maine — A person held at the Cumberland County Jail died Friday morning.
A correctional officer at the jail reportedly found the person unresponsive in their cell at 9:50 a.m. Friday, according to a press release from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
The officer called for assistance, and the jail medical staff and Portland Medical Crisis Unit (MEDCU) responded, officials said. First responders performed life-saving measures "for an extended period," but they were not able to revive the person, according to the press release.
The Portland Police Department and the Department of Corrections are investigating. The Chief Medical Examiner's Office will determine how the person died.
