GRAND FORKS — On the fourth day of a Grand Forks man's murder trial, clips of jail video calls recorded throughout the month after his arrest were played that provided some insight into his account of the altercation between him and 49-year-old Anthony "Tony" James Kiehl that ended with Kiehl being pronounced dead later that night.
In the clips, Donald Joseph "DJ" Bartlette told relatives he had been alone with the 49-year-old Kiehl, who Bartlette said tried killing him by coming at him with a knife.
"They say he had a broken jaw; I don't know how that happened, I popped him in the nose," Bartlette said in one clip. "Two jabs. That's my God-given right, man. ... I got a knife coming at my neck, it hits my (expletive) wrist, like this, what's my instant reflex?"
