The Mets are adding some depth with catcher Francisco Alvarez on the shelf.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic , the Mets are signing catcher Ali Sánchez to a minor league deal,

The move comes after Alvarez was sidelined with a thumb injury that he sustained in Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Seattle Mariners at the Little League Classic in Williamsport.

Alvarez intends to play through the injury before eventually needing surgery.

Sánchez will be returning to some familiar territory in Queens. The Mets signed him as an international free agent in 2013, and he made his MLB debut in 2020. He was traded before the 2021 season to the St. Louis Cardinals.
