STONINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) - Just days before classes begin, some parents on the shoreline are having to come up with a back-up plan to get their kids to school.
15-year-old Kaleigha Mejias-Williams is a student in New London’s magnet school program.
She lives in Pawcatuck and normally walks a short way to catch a bus to New London.
“She loved it. She thrived there. She made the honor roll, played softball, was on the dance team. She made a lot of friends,” said Chiara Longo, Kaleigha’s mom.
Kaleigha’s parents made the choice last year to put her in the magnet program. Stonington wasn’t a good fit for their family.
“She went through a really hard time all four years of middle school at Stonington with racial bullying and being called names,” Longo said.
