The Department of Education says George Mason University (GMU) has violated federal civil rights law for allegedly factoring in race in their hiring practices and promotions.

The Trump administration has made Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs a target and vowed to eliminate the practice from public and private institutions.

Students returned in droves Friday ahead of a new year at Virginia's largest public university — the same day the Trump administration announced it's found GMU in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The Department of Education says that under the leadership of GMU President Gregory Washington, the university illegally used race and other characteristics in university practices
