New York City approved the testing of self-driving cars on crowded streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn — but critics want to pump the brakes on the “dangerous,” big tech-boosting plan.
Mayor Eric Adams and transportation officials on Friday announced the city’s first-ever pilot program for autonomous vehicles, which allows eight of Waymo’s self-driving cars to hit the road with a safety “specialist” behind the wheel, effective immediately, until late September.
