Mariposa County District Attorney Mike McAfee resigned earlier this month after allegedly purchasing methamphetamine dozens of times from a Merced man.

McAfee had previously prosecuted and defended the man who sold him the methamphetamine in separate cases.

Driving the news: On Aug. 8, the Mariposa Gazette gave Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese over 30 text messages provided by Gary Schisnewski between himself and McAfee. • Schisnewski told the Gazette that he sold methamphetamine to McAfee 40 or 50 times over the course of two years. • McAfee then resigned from his position on Aug. 11.
