DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Severe thunderstorms have come and gone over the past few weeks. Tornadoes, on the other hand, have been thankfully almost non-existent lately.

The tornado season got off to a rip-roaring start in March with a combined 11 tornadoes in our area from three seperate events. April added another 13. Keep in mind, the yearly average is 20 and I didn't even get to May yet. Speaking of May, 9 tornadoes were tallied, which included 2 landspouts.

A landspout is a type of tornado characterized by a narrow, rope-like funnel that forms from the ground up, rather than from a rotating thunderstorm.
