Authorities in Vermont are investigating the suspicious death of a woman who was dropped off at a hospital after apparently being shot in the head.

Vermont State Police said the investigation began around 3:30 p.m. Friday, when police in Bennington learned the injured woman had been brought to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

The woman had significant injuries, including a head wound believed to have been caused by a gunshot. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Bennington police said a person of interest, who has not been named, was taken into custody.

The department added that the hospital was locked down after the woman arrived, but was lifted after police determined no gun had been fired on the ground
