DES MOINES, Iowa —

Here are two names that don’t appear to go together at first glance: Akira Kurosawa and Ed McBain. One is the master filmmaker of high art films such as Rashomon , Ikiru , Yojimbo , Ran and, of course, Seven Samurai . His filmography is a masterclass of filmmaking excellence, with many other filmmakers having been inspired by his works, most notably the influence of The Hidden Fortress upon Star Wars , and several of his films having been remade by directors in many different countries, probably the most notable being The Magnificent Seven .
