On Sunday afternoon, we heard a soft knock on our door in the Bureij refugee camp. Standing outside was a small girl, around 10 years old. Her face looked pale and her clothes were covered in dust. She looked up and said in a tired voice, “Uncle . . . can I have some water?”
Later, we learned she was displaced, living with her family in one of the tents at the end of our street. They fled their home in Al Zaytoun neighbourhood in Gaza City weeks ago. Her tired face and simple request reminded me of the stories we hear every day.
Residents of Gaza City are waiting for a full invasion by Israel’s military. While the offensive hasn’t yet started, att
