MALHEUR COUNTY, Ore. — A proposed underground gold and silver mine in eastern Oregon is undergoing federal environmental review, and officials are accepting public comments on a project that could bring more than 100 jobs to rural Malheur County.
The Grassy Mountain Gold Project would extract gold and silver from an 8,200-acre site about 22 miles south of Vale and 70 miles west of Boise. The mine would operate entirely underground, with only processing facilities and a sorting center visible above ground.
Rachel Goldman, CEO of Paramount Gold, the company spearheading the project, said the mine would produce more than 47,000 ounces of gold and 55,000 ounces of silver annually during its planned eight-year operation.
