Vietnam was bracing for Typhoon Kajiki on Monday, which had already brought heavy rain and wind hours before it was expected to hit the country's central region.
According to Vietnam's national weather agency, the typhoon is forecast to make landfall between southern Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces late afternoon Monday.
It is expected to bring winds up to 166 kilometers per hour (about 100 miles per hour), the same intensity as Typhoon Yagi that devastated Vietnam last year.
Authorities have suspended operation at two airports in the region, and called boats to shelters, closed beaches and called on people to stay inside.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces as soldiers were mobilized to reinforce dike roads and houses, state media VTV reported.
VTV also said a man died in Nghe An province after being electrocuted while securing his house roof ahead of the typhoon.
