The Metropolitan Police has confirmed 140 people were arrested on the first day of Notting Hill Carnival . Statistics released by the force show 15 people were arrested for assaulting a police officer, while 21 were detained on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

One of the officers attacked was taken to hospital after suffering injuries to their hand. Overall, Sunday (August 24) saw more arrests overall than the same day last year, on which 104 were recorded. Despite this, it mostly passed without issue as hundreds of thousands of people flooded the streets of W10.
