VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by an off-duty Virginia State Police special agent.

The shooting happened at 11:45 a.m. Sunday at the officer’s residence, according to a state police press release. It happened in the Bay Colony area.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 40-year-old man, identified on Monday as John Gregory Conner, came to the front door of the agent’s home and attempted to break in, according to the state police.

The agent confronted him and shot Conner, who died of his injuries, police said. In a Monday update, police said the agent rendered aid to Conner before EMS arrived.

The off-duty agent suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to medical treatment.
