(Gray News) - The first human case of the flesh-eating parasite, New World Screwworm, has been detected in the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to NBC on Monday.

The case is related to a person who had recently traveled to El Salvador. It was confirmed to be screwworm by the Maryland Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Reuters .

The parasite is the larvae of the New World Screwworm fly. It can devastate cattle herds, destroy wildlife and kill pets.
