Americans are carrying more credit card debt than ever, and that's a problem for numerous reasons. The total credit card balance nationwide recently surpassed $1.2 trillion , with the average cardholder owing nearly $8,000 on their credit cards . At the same time, the average interest rate on credit cards is closing in on 22% , which is close to a record high.
