Khabril Barnard ditched the car drop-off line to park and walk his daughter Kaylee to the door on the first day of third grade at the Peeler-Hampton Visual and Performing Arts Elementary.

"This is like my college," Barnard, who attended N.C. A&T State University, also said about the towering main building and the look of the campus.

He'd already been inside the school, one of the newest in the Guilford County Schools.

"Last big hug, last big wave and we've got it from here," strings teacher Olivia Eakes says as Barnard and others reach the door.

Because of the large number of students, the school is not allowing parents to do drop-offs in the classrooms.

"Be great," Barnard tells his daughter.

"I love you," she replies before rushing into the building that also sits
