"The Hunting Wives" is now a Netflix phenomenon , a star-studded series about southern housewives behaving badly — and they're packing more than booze and gossip.

But it all began with a story author May Cobb's mother told her once, while they were driving down the blacktop roads of Longview, her Texas hometown. Cobb's eventual 2021 novel, "The Hunting Wives," went on to inspire the series, first produced for Starz.

"My mom is such a good storyteller. She started telling me how in high school some of the rich boys would invite her to something called 'the hunting party,'" Cobb says, speaking to TODAY.com. "Basically, they would go out to the roofs of their giant cars and try to shoot small game."
