(NewsNation) — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has written a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to request that he suspends California and Washington's CDL programs.

Uthmeier's request comes just weeks after a deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike. Truck driver Harjinder Singh, 28, is accused of making an illegal U-turn while driving, resulting in the deaths of three people.

Singh, who authorities say is living in the U.S. illegally, was issued a commercial driver's license in California. It and Washington are two of the 19 states that offer CDLs to drivers regardless of immigration status.
