A Virginia woman's night went from bad to downright ugly after deputies say she was caught driving drunk with a child in the car — then turned violent when police tried to test her blood.
The meltdown happened around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, on Richmond Highway near Hope Road the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies spotted a Mazda parked in the right lane and stopped to check it out. Inside, they found 32-year-old Kayla Johnson of Culpepper sitting in the passenger seat with a child beside her.
At first, Johnson claimed she had been driving but “ran out of gas,” deputies said. Seconds later, she backtracked, insisting “no one” had been driving at all.
Investigators quickly realized Johnson had a prior DUI conviction, a revoked license, and was showing clear signs of intoxication. She was detained, and the child was turned over to a responsible adult.
Things only got worse when deputies tried to administer a blood draw to determine her level of intoxication. Johnson “became combative,” the Sheriff’s Office said, spitting on and kicking at a sergeant, who was mostly unharmed.
Johnson was ultimately charged with:
- DUI, second offense in five years;
- Refusal, second offense;
- Child endangerment;
- Two counts of assault and battery on law enforcement;
- Driving without a license;
- Parking on a highway.
She is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
