WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - The price of beef continues to reach record highs for consumers.

Compared to last July, ground beef is up 12%, and steaks are up 8%. This can be seen as a double-edged sword for those who ranch and process their own beef.

Calli Thorne is one of four owners of Yellowstone River Beef in Williston. They process cattle from all across the region, including some from Thorne’s own ranch.

She said as a rancher, there’s good money right now for cows and calves.

“A thousand-dollar animal a few years ago, now we’re paying $3,500 for that same animal. I think unless people are watching those markets like we do every day, they don’t understand how much they’ve changed in our industry,” said Thorne.
