A congressional committee is investigating allegations of "widespread" crime data manipulation within Washington, D.C.'s police department to make crime rates appear lower.

The House Oversight Committee is "investigating disturbing allegations that DC crime data is inaccurate and intentionally manipulated," Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said in a letter to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith.

The Justice Department is also looking into the issue, and U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro is leading that investigation .
