DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says an Israeli strike on a hospital in the Gaza Strip was a “tragic mishap.”

He said in a statement Monday that Israel “values the work of journalists, medical staff and all civilians,” and that the military is investigating.

Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin confirmed there was a strike “in the area of Nasser hospital in Khan Younis,” in a statement posted to X on Monday.

The IDF’s chief of the general staff, Rav Aluf Eyal Zamir, has ordered an inquiry into what happened and how it happened.

The strike on one of the main hospitals in the Gaza Strip killed at least 20 people, including five journalists, and injured scores more, according to officials from the health ministry, which is run by Hamas.
