Washington ― Former Senate candidate Joe Tate has endorsed Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens to be Michigan's next U.S. senator, her campaign announced Monday.

The nod from Tate, a Detroit Democrat and the first Black state House speaker, comes about two and a half weeks after he dropped out of the contest for the Democratic nomination for the Senate and said he was considering running for reelection to his state House seat.

“Haley Stevens has always been a fighter for Michigan and our communities, and I believe she is the strongest candidate to defeat Mike Rogers and the right person to send to the Senate to lower costs for our families and stand up to Donald Trump’s chaos agenda,” Tate said in a statement.
