The University of Florida’s board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to pick a medical doctor and researcher from Columbia University to be the institution’s interim president.

UF has been without a permanent president since Ben Sasse abruptly resigned his post more than a year ago. Its attempt to hire the University of Michigan’s former president, Santa Ono , ended in failure when conservative leaders — in Florida and nationwide — denounced the choice and Florida’s higher education board then voted down Ono in June.

With little fanfare, Donald Landry was tapped for an interim role that starts next week. He is currently the director of the clinical pharmacology and experimental therapeutics division and the nephrology division at Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New Y
