Exactly a year ago, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new literacy bill into law, set to take effect this September.

For many parents and professionals like me, who have spent years advocating for evidence-based reading instruction, this moment feels like long-overdue progress. While the bill holds promise, it’s essential to understand not just what it includes, but what it leaves out.

S2644/A43034 creates a statewide literacy working group composed of experts from across New Jersey.

Their charge: recommend how to implement evidence-based literacy strategies in public schools. The key recommendations include:

Mandatory literacy screenings twice a year

Evidence-based support for struggling students

An online resource hub to help schools choose effective programs
