ANN ARBOR ― Halfway through preseason camp, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said he knew he had his starting quarterback. On Monday, he made it official.

It had been trending this way for weeks, but freshman Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top recruit in the 2025 class, will be the Wolverines’s starting quarterback when the season opens Saturday night against New Mexico at Michigan Stadium.

“Probably halfway through camp, figured that this guy’s pretty good, think this guy might be the guy,” Moore said Monday at his weekly news conference. “Hit a scrimmage, and I think it was the first time we went into the stadium, he made a couple throws, and I just looked at (offensive coordinator) Chip (Lindsey), and he just nodded at me and looked at (associated head) Coach (Biff) Poggi, who’s behind me
