An Oklahoma senator received a sharp rebuke on Monday after sharing his concerns about crime in Washington, D.C., during a Fox News interview.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), a former professional mixed martial arts fighter, told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade on Friday that he does not wear a seatbelt while driving around D.C. because he is afraid of being carjacked.

"I don't want to be stuck in my vehicle when I need to exit in a hurry because I have a seatbelt around me," Mullin said. "I wear my seatbelt all the time, but in Washington, D.C. I do not because carjackings are so prevalent, and I don't want the same thing to happen to me that's happened to a lot of people who work on The Hill."

Mullins' comments come at a time when President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard in D.C. under the auspice of addressing local crime.

However, Mullins' comments didn't sit well with analysts Emma Vigeland, co-host of "The Majority Report," and Semafor reporter Dave Weigel. The two responded during a recent episode of "The Majority Report."

"Didn't he try to fight Sean O'Brien on the Senate floor?" Vigeland said. "But he's so afraid of seeing Black people in D.C. that he can't wear his seatbelt. That's Republicanism together. They're both incredibly tough but also so weak and scared."

Weigel noted that a lot of the carjacking issues in D.C. were born from a policy that raised the age of charging juveniles as adults, an issue that the D.C. council is currently addressing.

"The goofy thing about this whole discourse...is that carjacking in the city is getting better," Weigel said. "But there's this notion that there shouldn't be any crimes ever, and that sounds great, but is very hard to pull off. Being scared of a crime that is getting better is, I guess, human nature, but why brag about it?"
