EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- Las Cruces will be getting about 1,700 new affordable housing units under a lease announced Monday, Aug. 25 by the New Mexico State Land Office.
The development will be in East Las Cruces on state land near Organ Mountain High School, according to the State Land Office in a news release.
The development is a partnership with Sierra Norte Land Holdings.
This is part of an effort being pushed by Public Lands Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard to prioritize the use of state land to meet communities' needs, like affordable housing, her office said.
This is the first time the State Land Office has required that residential developments on state lands include affordable or attainable housing, according to a news release.
