ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla — St. Johns County leaders broke ground Monday on a $25 million project to widen State Road 16, aiming to ease traffic congestion.

County leaders plan to widen State Road 16 from two lanes to four between International Golf Parkway and St. John’s Parkway.

Drivers, such as Caleb King, say the project is long overdue.

“Traffic has definitely been part of one of the bigger problems in the town,” said King.

The improvements, led by the Public Works Department, include widening the road, adding new drainage systems and updating signals. Officials hope these changes will make the road safer and more efficient for commuters, especially in areas near local schools.
