PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County’s lead prosecutor wants to see reforms made to the juvenile justice system.

State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos joined WMBD’s “The Phil Luciano Show” to discuss how to address the rise in violent crimes in youth in Peoria.

Hoos says she would like to see updates to the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 to reflect current times.

“40 years ago, the biggest crime was a kid stealing something. Now, they’re killing people,” Hoos said. “And we need to change our laws to reflect the violence that our youth are inflicting on our society.”

Hoos says there needs to be a different approach from the rehabilitation offered in the current system. One reform she wants to see is mandatory minimum sentencing for violent juvenile offenders.
