NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Trump administration is being criticized for its crackdown on crime while cutting funding for crime prevention.

Last spring, more than $800 million in grants were slashed, much of the money going to non-profits like gun-violence prevention group, Ketchmore Kids in Newport News.

According to the Council on Criminal Justice, Newport News and Portsmouth received $1,450,800 and $2,000,000, respectively, as part of a Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative.

The grant in Newport News is supposed to be active until the end of September while the one in Portsmouth was supposed to be active until late 2026. Both grants are on the chopping block.
