SAN FRANCISCO —

Around three times a week, Brian Thoms sets out on the water for a journey he describes as the ultimate adventure.

"It’s really a passion of mine," he said. "It’s a chance for me to clear my head and really participate in a sport in such a beautiful setting.”

Thoms is a kite foiler. It's a new adaptation of water sports that are growing in popularity around the Bay Area. Instead of traditional hydrofoiling, which involves balancing on a board sticking out of the water while holding on to a sail, he is harnessed to a giant kite propelled way in the air.

“It’s my sense of ability to explore new places," he said.

This type of aquatic board sport allows him to travel long distances. He recently completed a trip from Crissy Field near the Golden Gate Bridge, to Sherman Isla
