Seattle – Washington State Ferries has begun a six-month trial to allow dogs to join their owners on the passenger decks on their vessels. That is, anywhere except the galley.

A survey of passengers and employees was so positive, ferry officials decided to try the new policy through mid-February.

During the trial, dogs must remain on leashes at all times. Otherwise, unless they’re upstairs in a crate or carrier. It is recommended that large dogs remain on the floor, while small dogs can be on someone’s lap or in a carrier. Owners must control their pets and clean up after them.

If there are any issues, crewmembers may direct pets to be moved to an outside deck or even back to their vehicle if needed for safety or behavior reasons.
