The emotions will be similar but the role will be completely different for Tulsa linebacker Chris Thompson when the Hurricane hits the field Saturday against Abilene Christian.

Thompson, a returning player who was penciled in to start at linebacker, broke his ankle two weeks ago and is expected to miss at least six weeks. Instead of running out of the tunnel with his teammates, Thompson will be coaching and encouraging from the sideline.

“I think I’m going to need one of those breathing machines,” Thompson said Monday. “I’m going to be too wrapped up, too excited.

“I’m going to be happy for my teammates. I’m ready to see them cut loose against some opponents.”
