As students head back to Two Rivers Public Charter school this fall, many will carry lessons they learned inside its walls this summer. The students were among kids in seven cities taking part in a program called Summer Boost, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, that offers small group instruction to help students make academic progress between school years.

It's a form of what's called high-impact tutoring, the kind of intensive academic support Summer Boost Principal Tyrone Ferrell — known by students as “Mr. T.” — would love to see continue at his school.

“For students to, like, feel more empowered in a space because of the class size, it really helps them engage a little bit more,” Ferrell said.
