PORTLAND, Maine — A 51-year-old fugitive from Maine accused of faking his drowning death near the Canadian border last year was arrested this week at an Amtrak station in Missouri, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Gregory Heimann was wanted on a federal arrest warrant for making false statements, which was issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General. He had been on the run for more than a year.

Authorities said Heimann disappeared on April 19, 2024, a little more than a week before the arrest warrant was issued. Officials say that Heimann left his home with a canoe and personal belongings for a river near the Canadian border. When he did not return, investigators initially believed he may have drowned.
