The Fort Wayne Community Schools board approved Monday an $85,000 state grant that not only benefits English language learners in the district's adult education program but could also boost the region's economy.

Administered through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the grant supports English language instruction for adults and integrates four civics concepts – naturalization, civic engagement, U.S. history and government.

Along with funding integrated education and training, the grant will support a position known as an ELL career navigator.

This person is a resource for adults who are learning English but were professionals with degrees and credentials in their native countries, said Lonnie Heck, continuing education programs manager.
