A man with ties to Port Huron has been elected as the new Supreme Commander of the Military Order of the Cootie.

Eric Bell was installed Aug. 16 during the organization's Supreme Convention in Columbus, Ohio, according to a community announcement. He is the seventh Michigander to serve in this position since the organization's inception in 1920.

As supreme commander, Bell will lead an organization of about 10,000 members dedicated to serving hospitalized veterans. The Cooties, known for their unique uniforms and commitment to humor, visited more than 431,041 veterans and donated more than $19 million in goods and necessities in the past year alone.
