CENTRAL MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Overcrowding in Maui schools has forced the Department of Education to come up with a redistricting plan.

As the state races to build another campus, some parents want more communication and support.

“It’s disheartening,” said Annette Ortiz.

Ortiz is a single mother of a seventh grader who was excited to be back in class with his friends.

But on his first day at Maui Waena Intermediate School, she got a phone call.

“You’re not supposed to be in our district. Your son wasn’t supposed to be registered at this school,” Ortiz said. “But you guys allowed me to register him in July? Nobody caught this until the first day of school? How is this OK? Who’s not doing their job properly?”
