YORK COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The trial of former Chester County deputy Evan Robert Hawthorne is now underway in York County’s Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court.

Hawthorne is accused of murdering retired Rock Hill Police Lieutenant Larry Vaughan in July 2021. The incident took place at Vaughan’s apartment on East Main Street in York.

According to investigators, the two men were involved in a physical altercation before Vaughan was found dead at the scene.

Hawthorne, once a deputy himself with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested the same day Vaughan’s body was discovered.

His law enforcement career had previously ended in 2019 after he was fired following a DUI crash while driving a patrol vehicle off-duty.
