Orange vests colored the streets of Santa Maria Wednesday during the 12th annual Day of Hope, as volunteers sold special edition Santa Maria Times to raise money for those battling cancer on the Central Coast.

Volunteers comprising more than 60 teams worked intersections in warm morning sun — making the most of every red light as cars slowed to a stop — and offering an opportunity for drivers and passengers to donate to an event that has raised $2.7 million for the region's cancer patients since 2014.

Donors from all walks of life waved down volunteers, handing over donations that ranged from a few dollars to $100 bills. Truckers honked their horns as teams cheered and waved signs.

Team Greystar, a property management company, has been part of the event for six years.
