Re “Photo radar is becoming increasingly common. That doesn’t make it any less infuriating” (Opinion, Aug. 23): Complaining about a speeding ticket for going 54 kilometres an hour in a 40 zone underlines the author’s misunderstanding both about speed and photo radar. A pedestrian hit at that speed would have more than twice the risk of dying than they would if struck by a vehicle going 40 km/h. Although often called a “cash grab,” photo radar is very effective at getting folks to respect the speed limit. The key elements in making photo radar acceptable to everyone are: no surprises (signs warning motorists radar is ahead), radar installed where crashes are a problem, removal of radar if crash rates do not decrease,
