It is difficult to overstate how flimsy the allegations against Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook are, or how dangerous Donald Trump’s campaign to oust her have become.

On Monday, Trump accused Cook of “potentially criminal conduct” and said he was seeking her removal from the central bank’s board of governors. Yet what has been offered as evidence amounts to little more than minor paperwork discrepancies buried in hundreds of pages of mortgage documents.

Cook’s alleged misstep essentially amounts to claiming two different homes as her “primary residence” on mortgage documents. It’s a minor error when filling out multiple mortgage applications that often contain hundreds of pages, and no evidence has been presented that it was done intentionally or that it conferred any discernible benefit
