Redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer will back up Drew Allar as Penn State’s No. 2 quarterback this Saturday against Nevada, James Franklin confirmed after practice Wednesday.

Grunkemeyer battled redshirt sophomore Jaxon Smolik for the designation, and while Franklin said the competition has been close throughout the spring and summer, Grunkemeyer pulled away ahead of the season opener.
