OTTAWA - A national report examining athlete safety in Canada is being released today. This report focuses on how abuse and maltreatment are addressed in sports and identifies gaps in protections for athletes.
The Future of Sport in Canada Commission, established by the federal government in 2023, is leading this initiative. The commission was formed in response to athletes' concerns about systemic abuse in sports. Lise Maisonneuve, the former chief justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, serves as the commissioner.
The report comes after extensive consultations with Canadians across a dozen cities, along with written submissions and survey responses. It is expected to highlight jurisdictional gaps that leave many complaints unaddressed by federal oversight. Currently, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport only investigates cases related to national, federally funded programs. This leaves lower levels of sport to manage their own systems, which can be inconsistent and inadequate.
The findings from this report are intended to inform discussions and help develop solutions at a summit scheduled for September in Ottawa.
