Olivia Colman was in awe of Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon improvising skills while filming their new comedy The Roses. In the loose remake of 1989's The War of the Roses, the Oscar-winning actress stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as a married couple who grow apart over the years and end up locked in a nasty battle over their house. While the leads decided to stick to Tony McNamara's script, their co-stars sometimes came up with alternate lines spontaneously, and Colman was in awe of their ability to let loose on camera. "We were talking about this, Benedict and I, we're very much (like), 'Tony McNamara's written it and our job is to do the script.' It's fairly boring of us," she admitted on the SmartLess podcast. "But then you're in a room with Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, for example, and you go, 'Oh, f**k, I can't do that. I don't think I can do that.' I think: Know your strengths, know your limits. I'm so thrilled to have seen them do what they do." The former Saturday Night Live comedians play Barry and Amy, a couple who are friends of the Roses. Towards the end of the film, there is a huge group dinner featuring the foursome as well as Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, Ncuti Gatwa and Sunita Mani. Colman admitted that she felt sorry for director Jay Roach trying to keep them all on track while filming that sequence. "There were some scenes where we were all together, like a dinner table scene, and it was so hard to get through the day," the Oscar-winning actress recalled. "I really felt for poor Jay Roach... (waiting for us) to stop finding ourselves so funny." The Roses will be released in cinemas on Friday.
