Five Missouri counties — DeKalb, Audrain, Pike, Polk, and Reynolds — have filed a lawsuit against the Missouri State Tax Commission, challenging its order to raise property valuations.
The suit, filed in Polk County, claims the Commission’s directive exceeds its authority and could lead to unfair tax increases.
Dekalb County Clerk Missy Meek told Missourinet that the timing of the order to raise commercial property taxes by 15% was especially problematic.
“My entities had already started the process of setting their levies,” said Meek. “That could either have my entities collecting too much, or not enough. It would not allow us to give my commercial patrons notice.”
