AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - The Maine Department of Public safety says more than 1,000 dangerous weapons seizure orders have now been issued under Maine’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law, commonly known as the yellow flag law.
The law allows law enforcement the ability to remove weapons from people deemed to be exhibiting dangerous behavior.
Maine’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law was enacted in 2019 and then upheld as constitutional by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in 2022.
As of Thursday, judges in Maine have issued 1,037 orders under the law across the state.
